Faculty » Karen Richardson

Karen Richardson has been painting professionally in watercolour since 1986. She grew up in northern Ontario near Algonquin Park and is drawn to rugged landscapes throughout Canada and abroad. She and her husband lead active lives in which snowmobiling, hiking, motorcycling, RV touring and gardening provide unique images for her artwork.

In 2005 Karen began teaching watercolour and perspective drawing at Durham Region galleries and in her own Port Perry studio/gallery. She enjoys showing students how to build their paintings in an easy-to-follow, step by step manner. Karen designs her own web site www.karenrichardson.ca, which includes a painting demonstration and a 'Virtual Studio' blog, with photos and stories about her classes, trips and artistic activities.

Recognized for her volunteer work in the local cultural community as well as her artistic ability, Karen has served on the board of directors and executive of Scugog Council for the Arts and on the executive of the Lake Scugog Spring Studio Tour.

Although her favourite subjects involve dramatic scenery and close-up details of the natural world, Karen also specializes in custom paintings of homes and commercial buildings. Over the years, her artwork has made its way into private and corporate art collections in nineteen countries.
